Known worldwide as the Automotive City, Detroit also has the distinction of being the only American city that looks south to Canada and the city of Windsor. Founded in 1701 by Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and 51 other Frenchmen, the city was originally known as Fort Ponchartrain du Détroit, that is, a straight along the river named for the Comte du Ponchartrain. In 1765, Detroit had the distinction of being the most populous town between Montreal and New Orleans, because France offered free land to anyone wanting to migrate to Detroit.

The current population of Detroit is 834,116 of which there are 52, 625 residents claiming Hispanic or Latino heritage. Of those, there are 8,875 who use Spanish as their primary language at home.

Although well known for being the home of the US auto industry, including the corporate headquarters of Ford, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler, Detroit is also known globally for its music, particularly the Motown Sound. Motown, a play on the nickname Motor City, produced a uniquely American sound combining soul music with a pop music twist. Famous Motown musicians include Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson 5.

Technology and health care companies such as Visteon, St. John Health and AT&T, round out the list of top six employers in the Detroit regional area.
